How to buy the best Jungfraujoch tickets for your visit to the Top of Europe [2024/2025]

As one of Switzerland’s most popular tourist attractions, a visit to Jungfraujoch is high on the list of many visitors’ sightseeing activities.

If you’ve been asking “is Jungfraujoch worth visiting?” or have been wondering how to get tickets to Jungfraujoch, this guide will answer your questions.

Firstly, I’ll run through a quick summary of the different kinds of tickets you can buy for a visit to Jungfraujoch Top of Europe and then I’ll give you full details on what to expect on a Jungfraujoch excursion, what to do at the summit and the various ticket options available.

You’ll then be able to decide the best ticket option for your visit.

What is Jungfraujoch? 

Mount Jungfrau is one of Switzerland’s most well-known mountains and, together with the Eiger and Mönch, it forms an impressive triple-peak.  Mount Jungfrau is located in the Bernese Alps and rises to 4,158 metres above sea level.

The ‘joch’ part of the name Jungfraujoch refers to a pass or saddle between two mountains, and this is what is referred to as the Top of Europe.

Jungfraujoch (altitude 3,454 metres) is home to Europe’s highest railway station, Jungfraujoch station, and it also offers stunning views of the UNESCO World Heritage Swiss Alps Jungfrau – Aletsch landscape.

How to get to Jungfraujoch

There are two ways you can reach the Top of Europe (Jungfraujoch).

The first, and traditional, method is to take the Jungfraujoch train (Jungfraujoch bahn in German) which involves a series of regional trains from Interlaken (or intermediate stations) and then the Jungfrau train operated by Jungfrau Railways.

The Jungfraujoch railway route climbs steadily up the mountain alongside alpine pastures before making its final ascent to the summit via a 7-kilometre long tunnel carved through the mountain.

Just before the summit is reached, the train makes a five minute stop at Eismeer Station (Sea of Ice).

Here passengers can disembark and look out the specially-situated windows on the platform, and on a clear day, take in the magnificent views of the Eiger and Monch.

It’s incredible to think that this railway line has been in operation for over 100 years.

The second, and newer, option is to take the Eiger Express cableway from Grindelwald to Eiger Glacier and then connect to the Jungfrau train for the final leg of the journey.

Of course, trains connect every 30 minutes from Interlaken to Grindelwald, making it a seamless journey.

• Interlaken to Grindelwald Bahnhof- 33 minutes – operated by Bernese Oberland Railway
• Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg – 34 minutes – operated by Wengernalp rack railway
• Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch via Eiger Gletscher – 44 minutes – operated by Jungfrau Railways

Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via Grindelwald by train and cableway

• Interlaken to Grindelwald Terminal – 29 minutes – operated by Bernese Oberland Railway
• Grindelwald to Eiger Glacier – 15 minutes – operated by Eiger Express cableway
• Eiger Glacier to Jungfraujoch – 26 minutes – operated by Jungfrau Railways

Interlaken to Jungfraujoch via Lauterbrunnen by train

• Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen – 22 minutes – operated by Bernese Oberland Railway
• Lauterbrunnen to Wengen – 14 minutes – operated by  Wengernalp rack railway
• Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg – 25 minutes – operated by Wengernalp rack railway
• Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch via Eiger Gletscher – 44 minutes – operated by Jungfrau Railways

Jungfraujoch train information

Travel time

In both the instances shown above, the Interlaken to Jungfraujoch (or Jungfraujoch – Interlaken) travel time is two hours.  You can choose to disembark at any of the stops along the way and reboard a later train.

All passengers are required to disembark at Kleine Scheidegg and board the Jungfrau train for the final leg of the journey.

Services

The train to Jungfraujoch operates 365 days a year.  There are twenty trains per day from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch, departing at 5 minutes past the hour and 35 minutes past the hour from 06:35 until 16:35.  The final train from Jungfraujoch – Interlaken departs at 18:43.

Onboard facilities

None of the trains operating from Interlaken to Jungfraujoch have snack bars and the Jungfraubahn from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch does not have toilets on board. 

Wheelchair accessibility

All trains operating on the Jungfraujoch line are wheelchair accessible. If you or a companion are in a wheelchair, you should advise staff at the station from which you depart so that someone is waiting to assist you to change trains at Kleine Scheidegg.

Eiger Express cable car from Grindelwald to Eigergletscher

An alternative means of reaching Jungfraujoch from Grindelwald is now available.  

Opened in December 2020, the Eiger Express Cableway operates between Grindelwald and Eiger Glacier. 

The cable way, which covers a distance of 6.4 kilometres, whisks passengers to the Glacier station in just 15 minutes, where they will connect with the Jungfraujoch train for the final leg of the journey.

Passengers who travel from Grindelwald – Jungfraujoch via the cableway will reach Top of Europe 47 minutes faster than those who travel the entire journey by train.

The Eiger Express consists of ultra-modern cabins with 26 seats. Each cabin offers 360-degree panoramic views.

Tickets for Jungfraujoch from Interlaken

There are numerous options when it comes to buying a ticket to Jungfraujoch from Interlaken.  Below you will find details and prices so you can decide which Jungfraujoch train tickets you should buy.

Regular ticket 

The standard Jungfraujoch ticket price from Interlaken is CHF 249.80 return per adult during peak season (1 June to 31 August).  This price applies whether you buy your ticket in advance or at a local railway station. 

The fare includes a return trip on the Interlaken to Jungfrau train, regardless of which route you travel (ie. via Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald). Slightly cheaper prices apply outside of peak season.

Fares are reduced slightly if you start your journey to Jungfraujoch from Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald instead of Interlaken.

If you’d prefer to wait and check the Jungfraujoch weather forecast before you lock in a date for your excursion, purchasing regular Jungfrau tickets can be a good idea.

Jungfraujoch Good Morning ticket

Early risers can take advantage of discounted Jungfraujoch Top of Europe tickets if they can travel from Kleine Scheidegg to Jungfraujoch between 08:00 and 08:30 and depart from Jungfraujoch no later than 13:13.

If you decide to purchase the Good Morning Ticket Jungfraujoch, you can expect to save around CHF 60 per adult.

Tickets can be purchased from railway stations in the Jungfrau region.

Discounted ticket with Swiss Travel Pass and Swiss Half Fare Card

If you have purchased – or plan to purchase – a Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card to cover the majority of your transport needs in Switzerland, you are entitled to a discount on your Jungfraujoch excursion.

With the Swiss Pass, Jungfraujoch tickets cost CHF 159.10 return from Interlaken and with the Swiss Half Fare Card, the fare is CHF 117.90 return from Interlaken.

The Jungfraujoch ticket price with Swiss Pass is slightly less if you depart from Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen.

Discounted ticket with Jungfrau Travel Pass

Another transport pass worth considering is the Jungfrau Travel Pass.  With this pass, your Jungfraujoch connecting ticket (or supplement) will cost just CHF 63 during low season or CHF 75 during high season (1 June to 31 August).

The discounted supplement applies regardless of whether you travel all the way to Eiger Glacier by train, or travel via a combination of train and the Eiger Express cableway.

As well as discounted travel to the Jungfraujoch, the Jungfraujoch Travel Pass also includes free travel on a number of other popular excursions in the region including the Harder Kulm funicular, Schynige Platte cogwheel train and the Grindelwald-First cableway.

Discounted ticket with Berner Oberland Pass

Yet another regional transport pass which offers discounts for Jungfraujoch train tickets, with the Berner Oberland Pass you’ll pay just CHF 99 for the return trip from Interlaken until 31 December, 2024.

From 1 January, 2025, holders of a Berner Oberland Pass will pay approximately CHF 170 round trip to visit Jungfraujoch. The price differs slightly depending on whether travel is via Wengen or Grindelwald.

Other discounts available with this pass include the Brienz Rothorn cogwheel railway, a cruise on Lake Thun or Lake Brienz, Grindelwald-First cableway, Harder Kulm funicular, Schynige Platte cogwheel railway, Niesen funicular and the Kandersteg-Oeschinensee cableway.

Discounted ticket with Eurail Pass/Interrail Pass

If your European travels extend beyond Switzerland and you are travelling with a Eurail or Interrail Pass, you’ll also be entitled to a discount for your Jungfraujoch excursion.

Child Fares

Children pay CHF 30 for the trip to the Jungfraujoch however they must hold a Junior Card (more info here).

Just because you’re not staying in the Jungfrau region, that doesn’t mean a trip to Jungfraujoch is not possible.  In fact, day trips from the cities of Bern, Lucerne and Zurich are all extremely popular.

Zurich to Jungfraujoch

Depart Zurich at 8am and travel by coach via Lucerne and the scenic Brunig Pass to Interlaken. Enjoy some time for sightseeing in Interlaken before travelling to Grindelwald where you board the cogwheel train to the spectacular Jungfraujoch.

After time at the Top of Europe to enjoy the views and the activities, descend by train to Lauterbrunnen where your coach will be waiting for your return journey to Zurich.

Lucerne to Jungfraujoch

Start your trip in Lucerne at 9am and enjoy a coach ride over the picturesque Brunig Pass and past Lake Brienz to Interlaken.  There will be free time in Interlaken for sightseeing before the coach drops you at Grindelwald station to board the train to Jungfraujoch.

Marvel at the scenery and exhibitions at Top of Europe before commencing your return trip.  You’ll travel by train to Lauterbrunnen and then board your coach for the journey back to Lucerne.

Bern to Jungfraujoch

Visiting Jungfraujoch from Bern is easy thanks to perfectly timed train connections.  

Half-hourly train services (journey time: 1 hour) travel between Bern and Interlaken Ost station. It’s then easy to transfer to one of the twenty daily Interlaken to Jungfraujoch trains.  They leave every half hour from 06:35 to 16:35.

If you’d prefer to cut down the travel time, why not indulge with a private helicopter and train trip from Bern?  You’ll be picked up from your hotel and transferred to Gsteigwiler Heliport where you’ll board a helicopter for the spectacular flight to Jungfraujoch Top of Europe.

After leisure time on the mountain, board the Jungfrau train for the journey to Interlaken.You’ll then be collected and returned to your hotel in Bern.

I always like to buy my Jungfraujoch tickets in advance as that means I’ve got a large expense out of the way and it makes my day-to-day trip budget easier to manage. You can, however, purchase tickets at any railway station in the Jungfrau region.

If you’d like to pre-purchase your Jungfraujoch ticket (remember, tickets are fully refundable up to 24 hours prior to travel), I recommend you use the following authorised ticket sellers:

Things to do at Jungfraujoch Switzerland

Whilst the spectacular train ride to reach Top of Europe is the reason most visitors make the trip, there are plenty of Jungfraujoch activities to enjoy at the summit, too.

Below you’ll find details of the various exhibitions and attractions on offer at Top of Europe.  If you are visiting Jungfraujoch in summer, there is the added bonus of the Snow Fun Park activities.

All other exhibitions and attractions are open 365 days a year unless otherwise noted.

Aletsch Glacier

One of the highlights of any trip to Jungfraujoch is the opportunity to view the incredible Aletsch Glacier. The highest glacier in Europe, Aletsch Glacier stretches for 23 kilometres from the Jungfrau to a plateau above the Rhone Valley.

This UNESCO World Heritage site is two kilometres wide at its widest point and is one of the most breathtaking views you’re likely to see.

Jungfraujoch Ice Palace

Created in 1930 by mountain guides using picks and saws, the Ice Palace features an incredible display of ice carvings.  Regularly changed – they do melt, even at -3℃ – you might see a bear, a penguin or even an eagle.

Alpine Sensation

Connecting the Ice Palace and the Sphinx Hall, a 250 metre long tunnel showcases the history of the Jungfrau railway and the development of tourism in the Alps. 

A moving walkway will transport you through the exhibition but be warned – it’s very cold in here so bring warm clothes.

Lindt Chocolate Shop

No visit to Switzerland is complete without a chocolate tasting experience so why should it be any different at Jungfraujoch? 

Not only can you try and buy delicious Lindt chocolates at the Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven at Top of Europe, you can also turn the handle of the mixing machine and watch a virtual chocolate-making display.

Sphinx Observatory

Principally an international research station, visitors to Jungfraujoch can enjoy the stunning views that the Sphinx Observatory offers. 

An elevator, which climbs 108 metres in just 25 seconds, whisks visitors to the viewing platform where they are rewarded with panoramic views of the Aletsch Glacier and the surrounding Alps.

Top of Europe Shops

Looking for the perfect gift or a memento of your visit?  The Top of Europe shops offer a great selection of clothing, watches, pocket knives and other souvenirs. 

They also stock a selection of essentials that you might have forgotten to pack including sunscreen, gloves and hats.

Snow Fun Park

There are plenty of fun snow activities to be enjoyed by all ages at the Jungfraujoch summer Snow Fun Park.  Activities available include snow tubing, sledging, skiing, snowboarding as well as the Tyrolienne flying fox.

All-day tickets, which cover all activities, can be purchased, or you can buy tickets for individual activities.

Omega Hole in One golf

Fancy yourself as a pro golfer? If you can prove it by hitting a hole in one at the Omega Hole in One, you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful Omega Swiss watch!

CHF 10 entitles you to three attempts at hitting a hole in one.  Tee off in the snow towards the Aletsch Glacier – land the ball in the hole 75 metres away and you’re a winner.

Jungfraujoch Restaurants

All that activity and high altitude (remember, the Jungfraujoch height is 3,454 metres above sea level!) is bound to make you hungry.  Fortunately, there are plenty of dining options at Jungfraujoch.

Restaurant Crystal

Open year round, Restaurant Crystal is an a la carte restaurant offering a delicious array of meals.  

Restaurant Aletsch

Lighter, but no less tasty, meals can be enjoyed year round at Restaurant Aletsch.   

Restaurant Bollywood

If you prefer a more relaxed, self-service style eatery, Restaurant Bollywood should be your choice.  Offering a selection of authentic Indian dishes, the restaurant is open from early April to the end of October.

Coffee Bar

Grab a snack, a pastry or a coffee at the Coffee Bar which you’ll find in the entrance hall of the Jungfraujoch railway station. Open year round.

Sphinx Bar

Enjoy a cold beer, a hot chocolate or an aperitif year round at the Sphinx Bar located next to the Sphinx Observatory’s terrace and overlooking the Aletsch Glacier.

How long should you spend at Jungfraujoch – the Top of Europe?

I recommend you spend at least three hours at Jungfraujoch. The Top of Europe complex is built on a number of different levels and it takes some time to visit the Ice Palace, Alpine Sensation and Sphinx Observatory.

If you go outside and visit the Snow Fun Park, you will be walking on snow so you won’t want to rush and risk falling over.

Try to put aside a whole day for your visit so that you can experience all the activities and exhibitions, and enjoy a leisurely lunch, without being rushed.

Jungfraujoch Weather

At 3,454 metres above sea level, you can expect the Jungfraujoch temperature to be cool! The average temperature is -7.9°C, so dress accordingly.

A couple of tips about the weather: 

Jungfraujoch conditions can be very different to the weather conditions in the valley.  I’ve been in Lauterbrunnen when it has been raining and overcast but by the time I’ve reached Jungfraujoch, it’s been gloriously sunny with not a cloud in the sky.

Weather conditions can also change very quickly in the mountains so you should be prepared for rain even if it’s not expected.

A great way to check the current weather conditions at Top of Europe is to watch live images from one of the Jungfraujoch webcams which are located in Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald and Wengen, amongst other places.

Local Tourist Offices, railway stations and some hotels display the webcams. Jungfraujoch is the region’s most popular excursion so it is easy to find out the current weather conditions.
